Newport Harbor defeated Esperanza, 13-10, tonight to create a three-way tie for second place in the Sunset League between the Sailors, Fountain Valley, and Los Alamitos (all 3-2 in league).

Newport wasn’t as fortunate in the coin flip as they were on the field. Los Alamitos (8-2, 3-2) will be the #2 representative from the league and Fountain Valley (8-2, 3-2) #3 behind unbeaten league champion Edison. Newport Harbor (6-4, 3-2) is eligible to apply for the division’s lone at-large berth and will be considered along with Crespi and St. John Bosco.

It’s the second straight year that the Sailors went 3-2 in league and didn’t pick up one of the three league berths. Last year, Newport Harbor and Edison were the odd teams out after the Sunset League finished in a five-way tie for first.
