Football: Bishop Amat-Mater Dei is top opening game

There’s no doubt what is the top opening game of the Pac-5 Division playoffs. It’s Santa Ana Mater Dei playing at Serra League champion La Puente Bishop Amat on Friday night.

Mater Dei has played some tough teams close. Bishop Amat is 9-1. Both are in the same bracket as top-seeded Huntington Beach Edison.

Edison’s path to a championship won’t be easy. A second-round game looms likely against Orange Lutheran or Dana Hills. And in the semifinals, it’s likely Lakewood or the winner of Bishop Amat-Mater Dei.

‘It’s never easy,’ Edison Coach Dave White said. ‘There’s a lot of good teams. I think it’s a pretty fair bracket.’

The lower bracket is much easier for No. 2 seed Mission Viejo and No. 3 seed Servite. I think both are likely to get to the semifinals.
