Football: Diablos try to stay perfect vs. Notre Dame

It’s 30 minutes from kickoff at Diablo Stadium, where Mission Viejo will host Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in a Southern Section Pac-5 Division quarterfinal game featuring two high scoring offenses.

Second-seeded Mission Viejo (11-0), coached by Bob Johnson, is averaging 45.9 points per game, led by senior quarterback Dallin McEwen (1,711 yards passing, 20 TDs, 6 interceptions) and senior running back Exavier Edwards (836 yards rushing, 22 TDs). The Diablos won the South Coast League.

Notre Dame (9-2), coached by Kevin Rooney, is averaging 32.8 points per game, led by senior quarterback Ryan Kasdorf (2,042 yards passing, 13 TDs, 7 interceptions) and senior running back Kenneth Boggs (1,035 yards rushing, 15 TDs). The Knights were 2-1 in the Serra League, losing only to Bishop Amat.

The teams share one common opponent. Mission Viejo defeated Loyola handily, 26-7, in Week 2 and Notre Dame routed the Cubs, 45-14, in Week 9.

Mission Viejo opened the playoffs with a 41-14 victory over Long Beach Wilson last week. Notre Dame beat Fountain Valley, 41-24, in the first round.
