If you like high school basketball, Saturday is the day numerous tournaments begin in Southern California, including Oaks Christian, Chapman University, Chaminade and Pasadena La Salle.

The Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman features Santa Ana Mater Dei, whose coach, Gary McKnight, should become the winningest coach in California prep history next month. Mater Dei is scheduled to play in the 8:30 p.m. game each night through Dec. 30 as long as it keeps winning, and there’s no team in the tournament that figures to give the Monarchs a tough game.

The Oaks Christian tournament should be outstanding. Here’s Saturday’s opening schedule: Reseda Cleveland vs. Thousand Oaks, 10:30 a.m.; Santa Monica vs. Alemany, noon; Colony vs. Pasadena, 1:30 p.m.; Los Angeles Loyola vs. Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 3 p.m.; Sacramento vs. Blair, 4:30 p.m.; Sheldon vs. Etiwanda, 6 p.m.; Horizon vs. Oaks Christian, 7:30 p.m.; Chatsworth Sierra Canyon vs. Richmond Salesian, 9 p.m.

There’s also a huge tournament at San Diego Torrey Pines, with Woodland Hills Taft, Fairfax and L.A. Price among the schools entered.
