Football: Harry Welch takes over at Santa Margarita

Harry Welch, the only high school football coach in California to have guided two different teams to state bowl victories, has been hired as the football coach at Santa Margarita.

Welch has won eight Southern Section titles. He won three at San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s and five at Canyon Country Canyon.

Welch has a record of 222-49-2, including a 46-game win streak at Canyon during the 1980s. He’s known for his energy, discipline and ability to motivate players.

He’ll join a coaching-rich Trinity League.
