Bruce Rollinson, the football coach at Santa Ana Mater Dei, heard the news about the hiring of Harry Welch at Santa Margarita, and he had an immediate comment.

‘Good hiring by Santa Margarita,’ Rollinson said. ‘He’s played a high-level of football.’

Welch coached the last three years at tiny San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s, but he had two stints at Canyon Country Canyon, going against the likes of Mike Herrington at Newhall Hart and Brent Newcomb at Antelope Valley, so he’ll be prepared for the coaching challenge of the Trinity League.

‘Cool,’ was the reaction of Servite Coach Troy Thomas to Welch’s arrival.

‘When this opportunity came up, I thought it was something I shouldn’t pass,’ Welch said. ‘I believe I can serve this school and this community and give them what I hope is something very special.’
