With one month to go before the baseball season begins, I decided to take a trip to Huntington Beach Edison and get a sneak peek at perhaps the No. 1 team in the Southland. The Chargers played an intrasquad scrimmage, and to see 6-foot-7 left-hander Henry Owens getting to pitch against teammates Eric Snyder and Christian Lopes would have inspired lots of scouts to make an early visit.

Snyder and Lopes each got a single, but Owens hadn’t pitched in six weeks, so they better not celebrate too hard.

What’s clear is that Edison has lots of star power. Its junior trio of Owens, Snyder and Lopes can’t be matched. The Chargers should be able to hit well. Lopes’ brother, Tim, a sophomore, third baseman Kyle Jones and catcher Jimmy Madden add to the attack.

But the big question is who will be Edison’s No. 2 pitcher? You can’t win a Southern Section Division I title unless you have a No. 2 pitcher who can win a quarterfinal or semifinal playoff game. One candidate is 6-7 Nic Hanson, who didn’t play last season but has the chance to be successful.

Here’s some video from the scrimmage along with Coach Steve Lambright talking about his team and the Lopes brothers.
