When is the last time Verdugo HIlls won a league title in boys’ basketball? According to school officials, it was 1959, which explains why the Dons could make history this week if they beat Arleta on Wednesday and Van Nuys on Friday.

Under third-year coach Jared Gibson, they are 18-7 overall and 9-1 in the East Valley League, with a one-game lead over Grant.

Everyone should have seen this coming after the Dons upset Palisades early in the season. They’ve got an excellent senior point guard in Aragad Abramian, averaging 16.8 points, a depending 6-foot-4 senior in Nick Brown, averaging 16.7 points, and an All-City volleyball player who rebounds in 6-7 junior Chris Dees.

It could be party time on Friday night at Verdugo Hills, so bring the hats and confetti, because the Dons are truly a team to celebrate if they pull it off this week.
