Boys’ basketball: Birmingham wins 90-86 in overtime

Sahdi Odu scored the winning basket on a tip-in and fellow senior Sedreth Gillespie sank two clinching free throws with five seconds left in overtime as No. 11 Lake Balboa Birmingham overcame a 43-35 halftime deficit to upset sixth-seeded Palisades, 90-86, Friday night in the first round of the City Section Division I playoffs.

Birmingham’s Rene Reyes swished an off-balance running floater to tie the score 79-79 with two seconds left in regulation. Angel Gutierrez had 23 points and Gillespie added 20 for the visiting Patriots (15-11), who entered the playoffs off of four consecutive West Valley League losses.

Garrett Nevels made four three-pointers and finished with 38 points for the Dolphins (19-9), including all seven of Palisades’ points in overtime.
