Baseball: Orange Lutheran routs Bishop Amat

It was no football game Friday night at Hart Park in Orange, but there were plenty of football players in baseball uniforms in the championship game of the Lerner bracket of the Newpork Elks tournament.

Orange Lutheran and La Puente Bishop Amat came in with identical 4-0 records, but it was Orange Lutheran that won the championship after a surprisingly easy 12-3 victory.

Bishop Amat pitchers Daniel Zamora, Brandon McNitt and Jacob Dominguez gave up 12 hits. Lutheran starter Bobby Wheatley (2-0), the quarterback for the football team, allowed two hits in five innings.He walked four and struck out three. Bishop Amat had football players Jerry McClanahan and Rio Ruiz, but neither contributed much.

It was that kind of a night for Bishop Amat, which started the season with impressive victories over top teams Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Palm Desert and Corona Santiago.

Lutheran got RBI singles from sophomores Andre Real and Cody Nulph. Leadoff hitter Ryan Forkel had two singles. Pinch-hitter Brandon Turner had a two-run double.

Lutheran Coach Eric Borba picked up his 200th career victory.
