Baseball: Taft improves to 9-2

It has been years since Woodland Hills Taft was considered a West Valley League title contender in baseball, but the Toreadors can’t be overlooked after they won their ninth game in 11 attempts Monday with a 10-2 win over Mission Bay in San Diego.

Zach Friedman allowed two hits through five innings. Matt Smitt pitched the final two innings. Taft has won seven consecutive games and begins West Valley play next month.

San Pedro (10-1) defeated Clairemont, 15-5, in San Diego. Jacob Johnson had three hits and is batting .622 (23 for 37). El Camino Real was beaten by Poway, 7-5.

In the Trinity League, the race got tighter. Santa Margarita handed Santa Ana Mater Dei its first defeat, 11-5. Servite upset Orange Lutheran, 2-0. And JSerra got three hits and four RBIs from Keaton Siomkin to defeat St. John Bosco, 9-5.

In Las Vegas, Reseda Cleveland (5-5) defeated Palo Verde, 17-1, in five innings. Freshman Matt Del Mundo went three for four with three stolen bases.

Birmingham (8-3) won two games in Las Vegas, beating Cimarron, 15-8, and Campbell Hall, 9-7. Erik Munoz had three hits and four RBIs in the first game, and Randy Medellin hit a three-run home run and had two doubles. In the second game, Pedro Santoyo was three for three.

Chatsworth (6-3) defeated Bonanza, 7-4. Aaron Brown hit a home run and Steve Karkenny picked up the save with five strikeouts. Ricky Obando had a two-run triple.

In the Camino Real League, L.A. Cathedral (9-2, 4-0) defeated St. Bernard, 4-0. Sophomore Oscar Leong threw a two-hitter. Jaime Figueroa and Brian Orozco had two hits each. Gardena Serra defeated St. Monica, 6-5. Freshman Kahlil Denson had two hits.

Fairfax is 10-1 overall and is 2-0 in the Dennis Gilbert Easter Classic.
