The only thing certain about the Diamond Sports National Classic is that the team that had to face junior left-hander Henry Owens of Huntington Beach Edison wasn’t going to score.

And that was the case Tuesday morning, when Owens improved to 6-0 with a two-hit shutout of Palm Desert, 5-0. Yes, Palm Desert had to use wood bats against the hard-throwing Owens. That was unfair. Last fall, Owens was the most valuable pitcher in a wood-bats tournament in Florida.

He struck out 12, which means that in all six of his starts this season, he has reached double figures in strikeouts. Do you think the pro baseball scouts can wait until 2011, when he becomes eligible for the amateur draft?

UPDATE: Edison defeated La Puente Bishop Amat, 10-8, to advance to Wednesday’s 7 p.m. semifinal game at Cal State Fullerton against El Dorado. The Chargers overcame a 5-0 deficit with a 10-run fifth inning.

El Dorado defeated Peninsula, 5-4. Orange Lutheran also advanced to the semifinals with a 5-4 win over Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe and will play the winner of the Crespi-Esperanza game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at El Dorado.
