Yes, lots of people are in a hurry to start thinking about the football season, with combines, camps and private workouts going on and speculation beginning on who’s No. 1 and who’s getting scholarships, but everyone should take a deep breath and understand there’s plenty of time before the real games start in September.

For example, there were dozens of quarterbacks at Sunday’s Nike camp at USC, but one of the best missing was Nick Isham of Westlake Village Westlake. His coach, Jim Benkert, is no fan of the combines, and he’s just interested in getting Isham ready for spring practice.

And people had better take notice of Isham, a junior who completed 74% of his passes last fall in leading the Warriors to a 14-0 record. Yes, he’s only 6 feet tall, which will cause lots of colleges to erase him from consideration.

But Benkert warns, ‘If you’re looking for an athletic quarterback, he’s second to none. He makes positive plays out of nothing.’

And, by gosh, he wins, which some college coaches might want to do occasionally.
