Boys’ basketball: Top player at Chaparral is leaving

Xavier Johnson, a 6-foot-6 sophomore basketball player at Temecula Chaparral, has told his coach he won’t be returning.

Johnson helped lead Chaparral to a 24-3 record. Coach Ed Coyle said Johnson’s father told him he hopes to gain more national exposure for his son at another school.

The family has connections in the San Diego area. But Santa Ana Mater Dei also could be in the mix.
