Tevin Carter of Los Angeles Santee, one of the top sprinters in the state, will not compete at Thursday’s City Section track and field prelims at Birmingham because of continuing injury issues, Coach Joe Kearney said Monday night.

Carter qualified in the 100 and 200 at last week’s Southern League finals, but Kearney said hamstring and back issues flared up and he has decided to shut down in track so he’ll be healthy when he heads to California in July on a football scholarship.

Carter finished fourth in the state 100 meters last season and was third in the 200. His scratch from the races leaves De’Anthony Thomas of Los Angeles Crenshaw as the clear favorite for City titles. Thomas finished sixth in the state 100 last season and second in the 200.
