The king of volleyball in Southern California is Los Angeles Loyola, which won its second consecutive Southern Section Division 1 championship on Saturday night after beating Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 23-25, 27-25, 25-20 and 25-16, in the championship match at Cypress College.

Loyola avenged a three-game sweep at the hands of Mira Costa earlier this season. And it makes the Cubs’ remarkable comeback in the quarterfinals against Newport Harbor even more important.

The Cubs returned lots of key players from last season’s championship team, but clearly Stanford-bound Steve Irvin took control in the playoffs and came through in the clutch for Coach Mike Boehle.
