When left-hander Rob Rasmussen from UCLA was drafted in the second round by the Marlins, there were lots of cheers probably coming from his old high school, Pasadena Poly, a small school known for its academics.

Rasmussen was a terrific high school pitcher who decided he could get better pitching in college. And it’s all worked out.

‘I’m a lot more prepared,’ he said.

The Marlins have been selecting a lot of Southern California products, which is no surprise since their president in charge of baseball operations is Larry Beinfest, a Chatsworth grad.

And in Rasmussen, they’ve gotten a pitcher who’s going to be a good major leaguer because he’s consistent, smart and works hard.

UCLA had nine players selected on the second day of the draft.
