Brennan Boesch had lots of power when he played for North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in 2003. He went on to play three years at California, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2006 and finally got called up to the major leagues in April. And he’s proving he belongs.

He hit his 10th home run on Sunday and is batting .337. He’s playing like a candidate for rookie of the year at age 25.

And his former coach at Harvard-Westlake, Tim Cunningham, is pleased.

‘You could see the talent there,’ said Cunningham, now an assistant at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and also a private hitting coach. ‘I had him for three years. Once Brennan got a good knowledge of the strike zone and the mental approach, he was going to be on his way. He’s always had that classic left-handed type of lift.’

Boesch played on the Harvard-Westlake team that lost to Encino Crespi in the 2003 Southern Section Division 3 championship game.
