Damiene Cain, a 6-foot-6 center for North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, has scholarship offers from New Mexico and San Diego State, and he showed Monday in a 67-62 loss to Woodland Hills Taft that he’s developing an effective medium-range jump shot.

The Wolverines, with lots of size, could end up allowing him to go outside on occasion, something he rarely did as a junior.

Taft was able to pull out the victory in a summer league game behind sophomore guard Chris Yanku, who played junior varsity last season but could receive lots of playing time if Landon Drew doesn’t return. He made some clutch free throws and played strong defense.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is losing two of its three top freshmen from last season, Jahmel Taylor, who averaged 16 points, and Ausar Madison. Taylor is expected to transfer to a school near his Los Angeles home. Madison may end up at an East Coast prep school.

The Mission League could have an interesting battle at point guard next season. Encino Crespi has a potential sophomore standout in London Perrantes, who can shoot and pass. Los Angeles Loyola returns junior Justin Childress, but the Cubs also will unveil freshman Parker Cartwright, younger brother of former Loyola guard Miles Cartwright.

Harvard-Westlake has an improving player in 6-6 junior Josh Hearlihy, the son of girls’ coach Melissa Hearlihy. He has grown two inches in the past few months.
