Chatsworth has reached the semifinals of the VIBL playoffs, and it appears the pitchers who had trouble winning big games last season might have learned a lesson or two.

Chatsworth returns its top four pitchers in Christian Lopez, Aaron Brown, Angel Rodriguez and Steven Karkenny. Brown is going to get the start Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a terrific matchup at home against Valencia West Ranch and junior left-hander J.C. Cloney, who has an 0.35 ERA and is being pursued by UC Irvine and USC.

Lopez threw a no-hitter on Monday against West Hills Chaminade.

‘The pitchers have done well this summer,’ said Chatsworth assistant coach Fred Pudrith, who has been running the team. ‘They’re maturing.’

These playoff matchups are great preparation for next spring, when Chatsworth is going to have to figure out a way to beat defending City Section champion Woodland Hills El Camino Real and All-City pitcher Jose Cardona.

In fact, it could be a Chatsworth-El Camino Real final on Friday night at Birmingham if Chatsworth wins and El Camino Real knocks off Moorpark in the other semifinal.
