Football: Excessive heat watch could affect practices

An excessive heat watch is expected for Tuesday, which could affect high school football practices in Southern California.

Coaches have been lucky, with temperatures below normal for July and much of August, but the soaring temperatures have arrived, and coaches must be prepared to adjust practices.

John Aguirre, the City Section assistant commissioner in charge of football, said, ‘Over 100 degrees, common sense should prevail.’

One of the hottest areas is Woodland Hills.

‘We’re the Baghdad of the Valley,’ El Camino Real Coach Kevin Williams said.

Schools might want to change their practices for early in the evening, but El Camino Real’s new field is under construction, so the team is practicing at a junior high without lights. Williams intends to hold practice Tuesday unless told otherwise.

Additional water breaks are recommended. And a dip in a pool helps, too.
