High school sports participation exceeds 7.6 million

For the 21st consecutive school year, participation in high school sports has increased and exceeds 7.6 million participants nationwide, according to the annual survey by the National Federation of State High School Assns.

Outdoor track and field had the most increase among boys’ participants at 25,561. Soccer was next with 19,597. In girls’ sports, soccer gained the most at 11,582.

Boys’ participation increased by 33,078 during the 2009-10 school year, reaching an all-time high of 4,455,740. Girls’ participation increased 58,546, reaching 3,172,637.
