If Reseda can defeat Van Nuys on Friday, the Regents will be off to a 5-0 start and very much in contention for the Valley Mission League championship.

Coach Alonso Arreola, in his seventh season, was an assistant to Joel Schaeffer, who coached football in the San Fernando Valley for more than 30 years, including 23 as Reseda’s head coach.

Schaeffer still drops by to watch games, and he might be surprised that Reseda actually tries to pass the ball. Schaeffer thought only bad things could happen when trying to pass, but Reseda has the potential for a good passing game behind junior quarterback Kwamhe Davis and receivers Chris Walker and L.J. Willis.

Reseda has knocked off Monroe, Cleveland, Chatsworth and San Fernando, all former San Fernando Valley football powers. So maybe the Regents of 2010 are ready to take their place as a City Section Division II title contender.
