Football: The real season begins next week

Yes, there’s another exciting night of high school football set for Friday, but forgive me for looking ahead. Next weekend the real season begins because it’s the start of the Serra, Trinity and Mission leagues.
I can’t wait for Crespi-Bishop Amat, Mater Dei-St. John Bosco, Santa Margarita-Orange Lutheran, Gardena Serra-St. Francis. And that’s just the opening of league play.
The Catholic schools and their alumni don’t like to lose. Big bucks were paid to hire coaches in the off-season to turn around programs, and next week, there’s no more fooling around. We’ll see who are the pretenders and who are the contenders.
