Girls’ volleyball: West Valley teams get top City seeds

Granada Hills was awarded the No. 1 spot in the City Section Division I girls’ volleyball playoffs and West Valley League rival Woodland Hills Taft was chosen No. 1 in Division II at Tuesday’s seeding meeting.

Granada Hills will open defense of its championship by hosting 16th-seeded Los Angeles Roosevelt at 7 p.m. on Monday. The other Division I first-round matchups are No. 9 Los Angeles Hamilton at No. 8 Reseda Cleveland; No. 12 San Pedro at No. 5 Lake Balboa Birmingham; No. 13 Manual Arts at No. 4 Harbor City Narbonne; No. 14 Bell at No. 3 Sylmar; No. 11 Chatsworth at No. 6 Van Nuys; No. 10 South Gate at No. 7 Woodland Hills El Camino Real; and No. 15 South East at No. 2 Carson.

Taft has a first-round bye in the 24-team Division II bracket along with No. 2 Venice, No. 3 Palisades, No. 4 Sun Valley Poly, No. 5 Verdugo Hills, No. 6 Eagle Rock, No. 7 Los Angeles Lincoln and No. 8 Los Angeles Franklin.

Thursday’s first-round pairings are as follows, with the winners advancing to Monday’s second round:

No. 17 North Hollywood at No. 16 Hollywood; No. 24 Belmont at No. 9 Van Nuys Grant; No. 21 Canoga Park at No. 12 Los Angeles Fairfax; No. 20 Panorama at No. 13 Los Angeles University; No. 19 Contreras at No. 14 King-Drew; No. 22 Westchester at No. 11 Maywood; No. 23 Arleta at No. 10 Bravo Medical; and No. 18 Washington at No. 15 West Adams.

Elizabeth Learning Center is the top seed in the Small Schools Division and will host Fulton Academy in the first round Monday night. Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies is seeded second and hosts No. 15 Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies.

Finals in all three divisions will be Saturday, November 20, at Roybal Learning Center in Los Angeles.
