La Jolla Bishop’s is the second straight team from the Coastal League to appear in the state bowls and the Knights are 24 minutes from victory in the Division IV game at Home Depot Center in Carson.

The San Diego Section Division V champion leads Sac-Joacquin Section Division IV champion Stockton Brookside Christian, 20-6, at halftime.

Bishop’s has over 500 students, which is the cutoff point for Division IV bowl game participants, but since Southern California only had one Division IV qualifier, the smaller Division III qualifiers were considered for the Division IV game. So far, The Bishop’s is making the most of its opportunity against the smallest school ever to play in a state bowl.

Alec Fisher has 59 yards and one touchdown in 59 carries and has caught a six-yard TD pass from Joey Moreno. The other score came on a 39-yard interception return by Robbie Steifler.

Brookside Christian quarterback Tony Rodriguez, who began the game having thrown for 46 TDs--third all-time in Sac-Joaquin Section history--has thrown a 13-yard scoring pass but has also been intercepted twice.

Both teams’ mascot is the Knights, both were runner-up in their section finals last year and both are making their first appearance in state bowl games.

The Bishop’s will get the ball first in the second half.
