Girls’ basketball: Serra leads 28-27 at halftime

Gardena Serra has made the most of second opportunities to take a 28-27 halftime lead over Santa Maria St. Joseph in the Southern Section Division 3AA championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Sierra Thompson leads the Cavaliers with nine points, three steals and two assists and Bria Richardson has five points, six rebounds and two assists. Serra has eight second-chance points and holds a 25-23 edge in rebounding.

Alyson Beebe, who is averaging 20.7 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game, already has 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights, who outscored Serra 17-14 in the second quarter and lead 5-0 in bench scoring.
