Baseball: Mater Dei defeats No. 1 Mission Viejo, 8-4

It has been a tough opening weekend for Mission Viejo, the preseason No. 1-ranked baseball team.

The Diablos suffered their second defeat on Saturday, falling to Santa Ana Mater Dei, 8-4. Blake Thomsen hit a two-run home run and Ty Moore contributed three hits while pitching well for the Monarchs (2-0).

JSerra pulled out an 11-10 win over Huntington Beach. Nico Darras hit a grand slam, and Austin Hedges and Parker Johnson also hit home runs for JSerra (2-0). Long Beach Wilson defeated Huntington Beach Marina, 9-0, behind Chase DeJong, who threw the shutout.

Andrew Rabiej scattered six hits to help Quartz Hill (2-0) defeat West Ranch, 1-0. J.C. Cloney took the loss. Camarillo defeated North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 3-2. Freshman Brian Ginsberg homered for the Wolverines. Hunter Virant struck out six with zero walks in six innings for Camarillo.

Catcher Renae Martinez went five for five in San Pedro’s 9-8, nine-inning win over Palos Verdes.

Orange Lutheran defeated Palm Desert, 5-3. Westlake improved to 2-0 with a 2-1 win over Palmdale in eight innings. Crossroads defeated Port of L.A., 16-0. Freshman Jack Freedman threw a no-hitter, retiring 11 in a row.

Brian Mundell hit a three-run home run, A.J. Balta had four RBIs and Quincy Quintero had a double and single in Valencia’s 13-6 win over Simi Valley. Sophomore Luke Persico had three hits and Garrett Gooding took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Hart’s 12-2 win over Moorpark. Hart will play Thousand Oaks on Tuesday at Thousand Oaks.

Granada Hills Kennedy defeated Rio Mesa, 7-6, with Jon Guerrero getting a two-run double. San Fernando defeated Palisades, 7-2. Willie Vazquez had three hits and three RBIs.

Damien defeated Yucaipa, 7-0, behind Antonio Gonzales, who struck out seven and walked none. St. John Bosco defeated Carson, 8-1. Taylor Sparks had a triple and single. Huntington Beach Edison defeated San Clemente, 5-4. Johnathan Brooks had a three-run double.

Chatsworth defeated Loyola, 5-1. Aaron Brown allowed two hits in six innings. Brady Conlan had two hits. Esperanza defeated Bishop Amat, 7-5. Golden Valley defeated Burbank, 9-6. L.A. Cathedral defeated El Segundo, 10-6, with freshman Julian Perez getting three hits and five RBIs.

Taft defeated Eastside, 15-5. Mike Hymes was four for four and Zach Friedman had two doubles. Max Fried threw five shutout innings and struck out seven in Montclair Prep’s 6-0 win over Oxnard Pacifica.

Mission Hills Alemany defeated Saugus, 15-8. Peter Van Gansen had three hits and Rene Deleon hit a three-run home run. Chaminade defeated Agoura, 3-2. Brandon Rapoport had two hits, including a home run. Crespi defeated El Camino Real, 9-6. Jacob Villela had three hits.

Santa Barbara defeated Santa Maria St. Joseph, 11-3. Lucas Benenati had two doubles and a home run. Oxnard (2-0) defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 3-0. Oscar Sandoval threw the shutout and Austin Davidson hit a two-run home run. Calabasas defeated Ventura, 3-2. Reseda Cleveland defeated Dos Pueblos, 7-6. Capistano Valley defeated Corona, 9-1.
