Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley closed the third quarter on a 10-3 run to trim its deficit to 53-39 against Los Angeles Loyola in the Southern Section Division 1A championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Loyola has led by as many as 22 points and remains in control, but the Cougars have started to make some shots.

Joe Stein leads all scorers with 19 points for the Cubs. Stephen Short and Nick Thomas have each scored 11 for Capistrano Valley.

Perhaps an even more heated competition is going on in the stands between the schools’ respective student bodies. Fans from both teams arrived with a variety of clever cheers that they have been exchanging back and forth at every stoppage of play.
