Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei 36, Loyola 33

Xavier Johnson banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer from well beyond the arc to give Mater Dei a 36-33 halftime lead over Loyola in tonight’s Southern California Regional quarterfinal at Mater Dei High.

Johnson leads all scorers with 19 points and Katin Reinhardt has added eight for the fourth-seeded Monarchs, who closed the half on a 6-0 run.

Joe Stein has eight points and five rebounds and Julian Harrell has seven points for the Cubs, who rallied from an early 12-4 deficit to take a five-point lead with three minutes left in the second quarter.

There have been four lead changes and six ties.
