Boys’ basketball: Jacob Hazzard gets hot for Loyola

With Los Angeles Loyola struggling to get rebounds, Jacob Hazzard got hot from outside, rallying the Cubs from a seven-point deficit en route to a hard-fought 77-66 victory over Santa Monica in the quarterfinals of the Fairfax tournament.
Hazzard finished with 24 points, Julian Harrell had 21 points and Parker Cartwright 14. Santa Monica exposed a potential Loyola weakness -- rebounding. The Cubs rely on their guard play, and Santa Monica was outhustling the Cubs, led by Trey Thompson, who scored 18 points.
But with the game on the line, Hazzard, Harrell and Cartwright stepped forward to provide leadership and hit the big shots. Loyola will play Long Beach Poly in a 6 p.m. semifinal game on Friday.
Poly defeated Mission Hills Alemany, 81-71, despite 34 points from Alemany’s Max Guercy. Roschon Prince had 21 points, Chris Croom 16 and Joshua Monzon 15 for Poly. Jordan Bell was an effective shot blocker.
The other semifinal matches Mater Dei and Fairfax at 7:30 p.m.
The Fairfax tournament has produced some outstanding games because most of the teams are at full strength for perhaps the only time of the summer. Players don’t leave for camps until next week, which should make for some terrific games on Friday and Saturday.
