Running back has been a position of strength in Southern California for many years, but 2011 starts with a definite skepticism regarding the overall talent at the position.

It’s a chance for newcomers to step up and gain attention.

Among returnees, Jahleel Pinner of Mission Viejo has committed to USC. Davien Payne of Citrus Hill rushed for 1,928 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior. Tyler Siudzinski of Tustin rushed for 2,142 yards and 25 touchdowns.

I’m convinced Shaun Wick of Ventura St. Bonaventure is going to have a big season. Lots of people can’t wait to see DaVonte Young of St. John Bosco. He sat out last season after being a standout as a freshman at Irvine. Terrell Newby of Chaminade showed potential as a sophomore, rushing for 1,372 yards, and his entire offensive line returns.

Ryan McDaniel of North Torrance is a physical runner. Jalen Moore of Bishop Amat had some big games in the Pac-5 last season. Chris Solomon of West Covina rushed for 1,980 yards and 25 touchdowns.

So there isn’t a lack of talent. But there isn’t anyone who can generate excitement like De’Anthony Thomas of Crenshaw, right?

That may be Robert Lewis of South East, known for his versatility. And watch out for junior Khalfani Muhammad of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. He’s the fastest returning 100-meter runner in the state, and if he gets loose, he won’t be caught.
