For the first time, Woodland Hills Taft is traveling out of state for a football game on Saturday, taking a road trip to Utah to play Alta from Sandy, Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Alta is 4-1 and defeated Los Angeles Crenshaw, 45-14, at Mission Viejo earlier this season.

First-year Taft Coach Chris Rizzo said 46 players will be flying to Utah on Thursday afternoon and returning Sunday morning.

‘This isn’t a vacation,’ he said. ‘We’re going to play a game.’

Taft is 0-2 and still trying to score its first touchdown of the season. Rizzo is trying to give his players a different experience, with study hall, curfews and a trip to the University of Utah on the schedule.

‘A lot of our kids have not been on a plane or been out of Los Angeles,’ he said.

Game time is 7 p.m. on Saturday. Then the Toreadors have to get ready for Saugus next Friday, and don’t get to practice on Tuesday because it’s a staff development day.
