L.A. Windward, La Verne Lutheran and Los Angeles Price are just a few of the small schools ready to take on the large schools in boys’ basketball this season.

Windward returns four starters, led by Nick Stover, who averaged 15.9 points and could end up signing with Loyola Marymount next month. Windward has games scheduled with Lutheran and Price, so we’ll get a good idea who’s best. And, if Orange Lutheran and St. John Bosco are in Division IV, the race for a state championship will be fierce.

The Southern Section is expected to release its new basketball playoff groupings at the end of October or early November.

Windward also will face challenges from Campbell Hall, Sierra Canyon and Pacific Hills in league play. The Wildcats have been more than holding their own in summer and fall games.

But the Wildcats have competition on campus for best team, because their girls’ team is loaded with top players.
