Boys’ basketball: A 31-point performance for Donovan Johnson

All-City guard Donovan Johnson scored 31 points to help Palisades open its season with a 70-40 victory over Torrance in the Redondo touranment.

No. 2-ranked Los Angeles Loyola defeated Compton Dominguez, 81-42. Julian Harrell had 13 points. Pacific Hills defeated Harvard-Westlake, 56-54. Wednesday’s quarterfinals: Fairfax vs. Mayfair, 5:50 p.m.; Loyola vs. Compton, 7:15 p.m.; Long Beach Poly vs. Santa Monica, 8:40 p.m.

No. 1 Mater Dei (2-0) defeated Los Alamitos, 72-27, in the Mission Viejo tournament. Xavier Johnson and Katin Reinhardt had 15 points apiece.

No. 7 Orange Lutheran defeated Valley View, 76-31. Gabe York scored 30 points and Peyton Banks had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

No. 8 St. John Bosco defeated Lakewood, 63-32, in the Gahr tournament. Daniel Hamilton scored 20 points and Isaac Hamilton had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

JR Powell, a junior guard at Simi Valley Royal, made five three-pointers en route to a 27-point performance to help the Highlanders defeat Glendale, 68-62, in the Burbank tournament. Nick Creber added 15 points. Max McCoy had 10 points and six assists. Clay Kasdorf scored 26 points as Canyon Country Canyon defeated Los Angeles Roosevelt, 65-34.

In the Simi Valley tournament, Westlake defeated Golden Valley, 88-35. Quentin Weinerman had 19 points and Joshua Brooks 18. El Camino Real defeated Verdugo Hills, 59-49.

In the Campbell Hall tournament, University defeated Sun Valley Poly, 71-32. Malik Spears scored 16 points. Campbell Hall defeated Canoga Park, 68-43. Cole Huff had 23 points and 15 rebounds. Aaron Holiday had 20 points.

In the El Modena tournament, Brandon Baker scored 24 points and had eight assists in Crenshaw’s 72-38 win over Paramount. Scores from the Pasadena tournament: Washington 73, Cajon 72; Etiwanda 66, Cleveland 55; Chino Hills 48, Canyon Springs 47; Price 68, Birmingham 49.
