There were some who wondered if San Fernando Coach Armando Gomez had lost his sanity when he proclaimed sophomore pitcher Alozo Garcia would be his ace without him having thrown a single varsity pitch.

Garcia, moving up from junior varsity, has done everything expected and more in the early season. He’s 2-0 and has struck out 17 in 12 innings while allowing one run, three hits and walking four.

‘He’s hitting his spots and doing a great job locating his pitches,’ Gomez said.

Garcia is an A student who handles pressure as if he were a senior. He’s scheduled to pitch in a Thursday night game against Cathedral at Birmingham.

Now it’s up to Gomez to find a No. 2 pitcher to help the Tigers make a bid for a second consecutive City championships.
