Anaheim Esperanza opened Century League play on Monday with a 9-0 victory over Villa Park. Brandon Luper threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits.
Mitch Christensen had three hits and Brad Andeson had two hits. Nick Catalano walked five times and scored three runs for the Aztecs (4-2, 1-0).
Quinn Brodey, John Soteropulos and Corey Dempster contributed two hits apiece and Kevin Carswell struck out five in 5 1/3 innings to lead Loyola past St. Francis, 6-2, in a Mission League opener.
St. Francis played without Coach Brian Esquivel, who Principal Tom Moran offered a ‘no comment’ as to Esquivel’s status.
In a nonleague game, Max Kaeller hit a solo home run and a grand slam during an eight-run seventh inning to help Taft defeat Verdugo Hills, 12-4. Nick Gendian threw a complete game, allowing four hits.
North Hollywood defeated Van Nuys, 3-2. Michael Sepulveda threw a complete game and hit a two-run home run.
Long Beach Poly (8-1) swept a doubleheader from Downey, 2-0 and 4-1. Kurt van de Mortel (2-0) threw a complete game in the second game. Hayden Hunt had a two-run single.
