It was a playoff-like atmosphere on Monday in the Valley Mission League showdown between San Fernando and host Granada Hills Kennedy. Both teams raised their level of play, and the pitchers, Alonzo Garcia for San Fernando and Pablo Gonzalez for Kennedy, were outstanding.

In the end, San Fernando (23-4, 9-0) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Golden Cougars, 3-1. Steven Campos’ RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Carlos Robles gave the Tigers their winning runs. Bobby Berumen led off the inning with a single, Freddie Flores reached base on a bunt and Isaac Dominguez put down the sacrifice to put the runners in scoring position.

Garcia, a sophomore, improved to 10-0 with a six-hitter, striking out five and walking one. Gonzalez struck out seven and allowed nine hits for Kennedy (14-7, 8-1).

Kennedy’s only run was a first-inning inside-the-park home run by Chris Mallon, who also had a single in the sixth. San Fernando turned two double plays in support of Garcia.

In the Northern League, Lincoln defeated Wilson, 7-4. In the Western League, Harrison Simon struck out 11 in Palisades’ 9-0 win over Venice.
