Baseball: Agoura wins Marmonte League title

It was up to closer Tyler Cohen of Agoura to deliver victory and a Marmonte League championship on Wednesday. With the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, Cohen struck out Scotty Caliguri, giving the Chargers a 4-3 victory over Newbury Park and the league title.

Agoura (20-4-1, 12-2) has made a remarkable turnaround in two years under Coach Mike Cordero, who took over a program in dissension and united players and parents.

Albee Weiss had two hits for the Chargers, who will begin the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs next week. Newbury Park dropped to 16-7 and 10-4. Nick Vigo had three hits in Simi Valley’s 6-4 win over Moorpark. Simi Valley and Moorpark tied for third place but Simi Valley beat the Musketeers twice. Calabasas defeated Thousand Oaks, 5-2. Westlake defeated Royal, 7-4.

South Hills won the Sierra League title with a 6-5 win over Claremont in eight innings. Bowdien Derby pitched La Salle past St. Paul, 2-0, and a championship in the Del Rey League.

In the Citrus Belt League, Redlands East Valley defeated Yucaipa, 5-4, in 14 innings.

Riverside North (24-5, 12-2) defeated Norco, 5-3, in its Big VIII League finale. Gabriel Clark picked up the win.

L.A. Cathedral finished 14-1 in the Camino Real League after an 8-1 win over Bosco Tech. Timmy Shiba allowed three hits. Mike Palos and Joshua Ibarra had two hits apiece.
