Baseball: Mitchell Holland flexes his muscles for Mission Viejo

What a first-round playoff game it was for Mission Viejo’s Mitchell Holland, who hit two three-run home runs to power the Diablos past West Hills Chaminade, 8-2, in a Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener.

The biggest upset of the day was Rancho Verde knocking off No. 3-seeded Alemany, 9-3. Tustin defeated Pacific League champion Crescenta Valley, 7-4. Damien defeated Redlands East Valley, 6-5. Glendora defeated Arlington, 11-5.

No. 4 Cypress defeated Claremont, 2-0, behind a complete game from Kevin Lillicrop. David Fletcher had an RBI double.

In Division 4, El Segundo defeated Oaks Christian, 4-3. No. 1 Palm Desert defeated Chaffey, 12-7.

In Division 6, Sierra Canyon pulled out a 2-1 win over Sage Hill in 10 innings. Sean Adler struck out 13 in a complete-game performance and also won the game with an RBI double that scored Brian Tucker with none out in the bottom of the 10th.
