Baseball: No. 1-seeded Harvard-Westlake is upset in Division 2

The season is over for Harvard-Westlake, seeded No. 1 in Southern Section Division 2. Placentia Valencia knocked off the Wolverines, 3-1, behind Zach Williams, who struck out nine and allowed five hits in a complete-game performance. Cesar Serna hit a two-run home run.

Also going down in Division 2 was No. 4-seeded Cypress, which lost to Glendora, 5-2.

In Division 1, top-seeded Orange Lutheran got three hits from Conner Sullivan and a three-run double from Matt Stumme in a 7-2 victory over Vista Murrieta. Orange Lutheran will play at West Ranch on Friday in the quarterfinals. West Ranch defeated Capistrano Valley, 8-5. JD Kruskopf had three hits, including two doubles. JC Cloney hit a two-run home run. Gabe Peralta had a two-run single.

Saugus upset Riverside North, 7-4. Chris Danielson threw five innings of shutout relief. Austin Rodriguez and Chris Devery hit home runs. Saugus rallied from a 4-0 deficit. Saugus will play Newbury Park, which shocked El Toro, 2-0, behind Matt Haskins, who threw five shutout innings. Then ace Luke Eubank came in and threw 18 pitches _ all strikes _ to come up with the save. Eubank struck out four of the six batters he faced. Haskins and Eubank had RBIs in the sixth inning to break up a 0-0 deadlock.

Esperanza defeated Marina, 2-0. Scott Mason threw 6 1/3 innings and Brandon Luper got the save. El Dorado defeated Huntington Beach, 6-1.

Mater Dei defeated Temecula Valley, 6-5. Ty Moore struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh and also had a two-run home run and RBI double. Tyler Adkinson broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh with an RBI single. Corona defeated Agoura, 5-4.

In Division 3, Connor Deneen threw a four-hitter in Beckman’s 3-0 win over Colton. In Division 5, Cathedral defeated Sierra Vista, 4-0. Sophomore Julian Perez threw 6 1/3 innings. Freshman Willie Aguilar had an RBI double and sophomore Mike Palos had a squeeze bunt to drive in a run. Top-seeded Bonita defeated Garden Grove, 5-3. Justin Garza had three RBIs.

In Division 4, Palm Desert defeated El Segundo, 7-1. Brian Serven threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Brother Jonathan Serven had three hits.

In Division 6, Sean Adler retired the final 10 batters of the game in Sierra Canyon’s 3-0 win over Kern Valley. Brock Bell and Kyle Weber each had RBIs.
