It was a long day on Saturday at the 16-team Dana Hills seven-on-seven passing tournament. Mission Hills Alemany and Santa Ana Mater Dei faced off in the first game at 8:30 a.m. Alemany won. Each team played five more games, but by 5:30 p.m., they were in a rematch in the championship game.

Alemany defeated Mater Dei again to finish 7-0 in the tournament. It’s pretty clear from the Warriors having won three passing tournaments that their skill position players, particularly at receiver, will be among the best in the Pac-5 Division.

Remember the names _ Steven Mitchell, Devin Ross and DeSean Holmes. Those are the receivers quarterback Devon Dunn is having fun throwing to. Only Matt Barkley at USC knows what it must be like to have such a fabulous collection of receivers. Mitchell caught a TD pass on the final play to beat Upland in the semifinals.

Mater Dei did well behind receiver Thomas Duarte and quarterback Ryan McMahon. The Monarchs also used a group of players from their championship freshman team who only should get better as the summer proceeds. Mater Dei’s best win came in a quarterfinal victory over Santa Margarita.

Mission Viejo made it to the semifinals behind its new quarterback, Ian Fieber, a transfer from Orange Lutheran who showed off a strong arm.
