There was no lack of talent at the 24-team El Toro seven-on-seven passing tournament on Saturday, and when it was all over, Newhall Hart defeated Gardena Serra in the championship game with a touchdown on the final play. Connor Wingenroth caught the winning TD from Brady White.

Hart knocked off El Toro in the semifinals and featured another outstanding performance from sophomore receiver Trent Irwin, who continues to give any and all defensive backs trouble. Wingenroth at cornerback and Garrett Updegraft at linebacker were singled out by Coach Mike Herrington. Hart’s only losses in summer passing competitions have been to Crespi, Upland and twice to Alemany.

Serra defeated La Verne Damien in the semifinals. Serra quarterback Jalen Greene had his share of big plays, and receivers Jordan Lasley and Darrell Fuery made some nice receptions.

El Toro quarterback Conner Manning helped his team defeat Santa Margarita in pool play. El Toro won the toughest bracket of the tournament that also included St. John Bosco.

In the Mission Viejo passing tournament, Mission Viejo defeated Crespi in the final. The Diablos also won the lineman competition.

Next week’s big tournament is Saturday at Huntington Beach Edison. College of the Canyons is also hosting a tournament Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
