First-year Coach Jimmy Nolan of Carson figures to be quite emotional on Friday night when the Colts play Santa Ana Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium.

Nolan graduated from Mater Dei in 1992. He was a member of Mater Dei’s 1991 Southern Section championship team that defeated Eisenhower, playing for Coach Bruce Rollinson. Rollinson and defensive coordinator Eric Johnson have been his teachers.

‘It’s special,’ Nolan said. ‘I’m playing against my mentors. They molded me.’

Carson is 0-2 but could have won both games against Long Beach Poly and Fresno Edison. Two-way players Kendell Sparks and Tony Ingram lead the Colts.

Nolan believes the Colts are improving.

‘We’re fighting,’ he said.
