Boys’ basketball: Doug Mitchell is on the verge of coaching milestone

In 23 years as boys’ basketball coach at Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Doug Mitchell has won 499 games. Victory No. 500 could come on Monday in the opening game of the Westchester tournament against Manual Arts at 5 p.m. at St. Bernard.

Bishop Montgomery is ranked No. 5 in The Times’ preseason rankings. Mitchell has guided the program to two state championships and four Southern Section titles. His record is 499-156.
