Crenshaw lost 86-83 in overtime to Brentwood on Friday in a consolation game of the Santa Monica tournament, but no one will blame the outcome on Andre Edwards.

The 6-foot-5 senior forward scorched the nets with 44 points and nearly rallied the Cougars (3-4) to victory after they had trailed by 11 points in the fourth quarter. Teammate Birdel Hodge hit a jumper to send the game into overtime.

Edwards is having a tournament to remember. He warmed up with 16 points in the Cougars’ 56-49 opening-round win against City Section rival Palisades and poured in 26 more in Wednesday’s 82-74 loss to host Santa Monica. Friday’s effort made it 86 points in three games, an average of 28.6 per contest. If he finishes the tournament with another huge game, can you say MVP?

Edwards showed he was capable of putting up big numbers last winter and has lived up to the hype so far this year. He had a 40-point game against San Clemente and 24 against Santa Margarita.

Last season he was an All-City selection and ended his junior season with a 29-point performance in a regional playoff loss to Loyola.

Only time will tell if Crenshaw can ride Edwards’ hot shooting all the way to the City championship.
