One of the biggest turnarounds for the 2013 basketball season has happened at Sun Valley Poly, which went from 11-17 last season to 19-7 this season under first-year Coach Alan Woskanian. The Parrots will play Hamilton on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills for the City Section Division III championship.

This team doesn’t compare to the greatest team in Poly history, the 1961 squad that won the City title led by Hall of Famer Gail Goodrich. Poly also won an Invitational title in 1999.

But the Parrots have a trio of underclassmen at the guard position in sophomores Cesar Reyes and Brian Sanchez and junior Sal Gonzalez. They will be at a size disadvantage against Hamilton, but Woskanian has figured out how to use his guards to get his team within one win of a title.

‘The two sophomores are handling the pressure well,’ he said.

It’s old-school basketball the Parrots are playing. And it just might work.
