Football: Jon Mack resigns as coach at Crespi

Jon Mack has resigned after three years as football coach at Encino Crespi. A new president and a soon-to-be-new principal appear to have caused Mack to look elsewhere. His comfort zone had changed, along with other issues.
Crespi didn’t make the Pac-5 playoffs the last two seasons, missing out in 2012 despite an 8-2 record. Mack was highly successful in building Ventura St. Bonaventure’s program into a powerhouse until leaving for Ventura College.
He had put his name into the mix for at least one known job opening earlier this year, Damien, and also an assistant principal’s job at Oxnard Santa Clara. He’s expected to end up at Santa Clara, which is a return to his Ventura County roots.
In a text message, Mack said, ‘I’m very proud of what we accomplished at Crespi on the field [24 athletes signing] and a record 10 this year. In the classroom, over 3.0 GPA last two years. But mostly in our faith development and community service and adoration of Jesus Christ.’
With Crespi looking for a football coach, the rumors will be fast and intense. Former Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell is available. He previously coached at Crespi. He coached last season at Occidental College. Crespi certainly would welcome back former coach Troy Thomas, who left for Servite after being unhappy with changes he saw taking place within the school.
If Crespi decides to hire from within, offensive coordinator Pepe Villasenor would be a popular choice.
