Trash Firm Seeks to Halt Service at 653 Carson Homes

The city’s garbage collector will submit a request to Carson officials this week for permission to halt trash collection service at an additional 653 city households.

The new request by Western Waste Industries to terminate rubbish service is the fourth in a series of such actions that began in September. If the company’s new request is granted, trash service will have been suspended at 2,439 Carson households.

About 250 accounts have been paid since the suspensions began, according to Bill Goedike, vice president for corporate administration of the Carson-based waste company. Goedike said an additional 75 accounts have been settled through other means.

The city is continuing to negotiate with the waste company for rate changes that would accompany a change in billing procedures, which would eliminate the possibility of future suspensions. Carson voters in November overwhelmingly approved an advisory ballot measure that would place garbage collection fees on county property tax rolls if there were a subsequent reduction in cost for the service.
