THEY’RE NOT PLAYING OUR SONG

While I think that it would be swell to have a catchy little tune for the Calendar section, I’m not particularly enthusiastic about Irv Letofsky’s free-for-all lyric contest (“Sing a Song for Calendar,” Dec. 30).

It’s not that I feel Calendar readers are incapable of producing an adequate anthem; surely, their flair and creativity is demonstrated each week on the Letters Page.

However, it is only fair that the honor of composing the Calendar song be bestowed upon Bruce Springsteen, Prince and a duo of John Doe and Exene Cervenka.

After these worthy contestants submit their efforts, the best song can be determined by Robert Hilburn and his PopMeter cronies. The winner should be awarded a record contract with a small, independent, L.A.-based label. Maybe the runners-up would agree to do back-up work on the recording.

Who knows . . . perhaps the Calendar theme would eventually make it onto Billboard’s Top 10.
